In 1975, W. David Kingery gained the support of the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club, the Blue Water Sailing Club, and the Beverly Yacht Club in his pursuit to create a cruising race. In 1977, the first Marion-Bermuda Cruising Yacht Race saw 104 starters cross the line.
The first Azores and back race left the UK in 1975 with 52 yachts at the starting line, and with such a turnout and so many competitors clamouring for a repeat event, it was decided to hold AZAB at four-yearly intervals.
